Agent Vinod’s latest single gives rise to a new genre – Mujra Rock!

Saif Ali Khan’s magnum opus Agent Vinod’s music has been composed by Pritam, who seems to have already delivered a hit with Dil Mera Muft Ka – a Mujra style song picturised on Kareena Kapoor & Maryam Zakharia.

By the way – that’s a fictitious genre I’ve come up with. But you have to hear the song to believe it.

Factor #1: The setting does seem perfect for a mujra – but the song really deceives the listener. The slow initiation a la Kajra Re from Bunty Aur Babli paves the way for some serious guitar riffs and heavily synthesized beats.

Factor #2: The singers – Nandini Srikar, Muazzam, Rizwan, Shadab Faridi, Altamush Faridi & Shabab Sabri. The stark similarity between Nandini and Alisha Chinai’s voice is flummoxing –  very thumri and qawalli-esque.

Factor #3: What makes this song work are Neelesh Misra’s interesting lyrics:

 “Pheke nazar ke sikke usne,
Bik gayi hoon main
Usne jo choo liya toh haye
Lage ke nayi hoon main”

For once, Pritam seems to have come up with an original tune after all.
